Science and Faith

  • Reading: the text as I type it
  • Watching: my computer screen
  • Eating: nothing

Time moves by so fast. I feel as if I am standing still, standing silently, in a crowded room, while everything else whirls about furiously. I have many dreams, hopes, and goals that I may never get to fulfill but yet I pursue. I engage in meaningless behaviors on the off chance that one of them might be important. One thing may make all the difference. There is no way to know for sure. I act on the faith that if I try hard enough, I will succeed but in life, nothing is guaranteed.

In science, the best way to know is to test it empirically. However, the scientific method is limited. Benjamin Franklin said that “not everything that counts can be counted and not everything that can be counted counts.” I like those words but at the same time, I fear them. What if I cannot be counted? Many people believe things solely on the basis of faith, disregarding science altogether. Others believe things solely on the basis of science, refusing to believe anything they cannot understand or methodically prove. However, there is, or at least there should be, a balance between the two. You cannot prove that love exists but how many people would deny its existence? There are things that cannot be proven or measured or even seen, yet we know they exist. Some things are simply beyond the realm of science. Those things are matters of the heart, sometimes illogical, sometimes hard to explain, always impossible to prove. Yet, these things are not unimportant. It is imperative that with all our sophistication as a society, we do not forget what got us here in the first place, our ability to know and feel and experience that which cannot be proven.

It's all over and I'm standing pretty
In this dust that was a city
If I could find a souvenir
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you, and let it go
